Chicago Midway International Airport MDW
Commonly referred to as Midway Airport or simply Midway, Chicago Midway International Airport MDW is Chicago’s second largest airport located only 8 miles SW of Chicago Loop and bordered by 55th St to the north, Central Ave to the west, 63rd St to the south and Cicero Ave to the east (which is also the terminal entrance).
Built in 1923 and originally named Chicago City Park then Chicago Municipal Airport, the airport was officially named Chicago Midway Airport on July 8, 1949 to commemorate the World War II Battle of Midway. In 1932 Midway became the world’s busiest airport and held the title for three decades before O’Hare claimed the title for the first time in 1961. Before World War II Midway was the origin or destination of one out of four U.S. airline flights.
In 2002, after 40 years of absence, direct international service returned to Midway with the opening of the new Federal Inspection Service facility in Concourse A.
