DuPage Airport DPA
A general aviation airport DuPage Airport DPA is located in West Chicago about 29 miles west of Downtown Chicago. It is owned and operated by the DuPage Airport Authority. The airport also serves as a reliever for Chicago O’Hare International Airport ORD and Chicago Midway International Airport MDW.
Started by two businessmen who, in 1927, purchased the land (previously used for sheep-grazing) and used it as a grass strip for barnstorming, DuPage Airport DPA was requisitioned by the US Navy in 1941 for training pilots. Once the war was over the Navy sold the airport to DuPage County for $1.
With the increased air traffic in the area, the DuPage Airport was designated as a reliever airport for general aviation in late 1970s.
Learning from the difficulties encountered by Midway with noise complaints from residents and businesses around it, the DuPage Airport Authority increased the airport property to 2,800 acres by 1992 which provided enough room for the buffer zone around the airport.
