Milwaukee/General Mitchell International Airport MKE
Owned and operated by Milwaukee County, General Mitchell International Airport MKE is a public airport located just 5 miles south of Downtown Milwaukee.
The roots of the airport are in an airfield built in 1920 by businessman Thomas Hamilton and named Hamilton Airport. The land was later (1926) bought by Milwaukee County which built the Milwaukee County Airport renamed on March 17 1941 after United States Army Air Service General William Mitchell who is often regarded as the father of United States Air Force and who was raised in Milwaukee. The county changed the airport’s name from General Mitchell Field to General Mitchell International Airport on June 19, 1986. However, many locals still refer to the airport as Mitchell Field.
General Mitchell International Airport is used mainly by travelers throughout Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. Since many use it as an alternative to Chicago O’Hare International Airport ORD and Chicago Midway International Airport MDW, Mitchell is considered Chicago’s third airport.
