Palwaukee/Chicago Executive Airport PWK
Located in Wheeling (about 18 miles northwest of Chicago) and publicly owned by the City of Prospect Heights and the Village of Wheeling, Chicago Executive Airport PWK is the third busiest airport in Illinois (after O’Hare and Midway) with over 150,000 landings and take-offs per year.
Opened in 1925 as Gauthier’s Flying Field, the airport was renamed in 1928 Pal-Waukee after the two major roads that intersect at the southeast corner of the airport: Palatine Rd and Milwaukee Ave. The airport was purchased by George J. Priester in 1953. George’s son, Charlie, sold the airport (in 1986) to the municipalities of Prospect Heights and Wheeling, at which point the airport was renamed Palwaukee Municipal Airport. In order to reflect the airport’s importance in the area, the name was changed again in 2007 to Chicago Executive Airport.
